Crater Lake, Montana

Preview: A popular Jewel Basin hike through subalpine terrain to a good fishing lake. To reach high-elevation lakes, you usually have to make a healthy climb. Crater Lake is an exception. The trail starts high, so it’s 6 easy miles to this scenic fishing lake. The Forest Service adequately maintains this trail all summer. The trail is very popular, so expect to see other hikers. Note the special regs at the trail head information board: Dogs must be on leashes; no campfires at Birch, Crater, Picnic, and Twin Lakes; and no more than twelve people in a party.
